How To Be Creative – Part II

An Interview With WhenInManila.com's Creative Director Vince Golangco

When Vince Golangco and some friends started WhenInManila.com, it captured the imagination of Pinoys the world over looking for some fresh perspective about what to do and what happens in Manila. Vince is a busy man, when he's not doing "news reports" on WhenInManila, he actually makes news by going around the metro to host events, parties and conferences. In his interview, he shares with us some secrets of a creative mind.

Take us back to when YOU were starting WhenInManila.com.  What was YOUR original motivation?

For WhenInManila.com, it was more of finding something fun. Travel, humor and creativity are the staples of the site and the videos we produce. My team and I truly enjoy what we do and are VERY passionate about it!

What do you think is the future of WhenInManila.com?

I really see WhenInManila.com as a pioneer in the Viral Video Production world. We’re starting to get a lot of consulting requests as well as clients interested in viral videos. The market we’re in, here in the Philippines, is now catching up with the rest of the world and we’re about to see a big spike in the need for internet marketing and online video production. We hope to be a leader in these fields when they finally mature.

What are some of the best things about being a Chief Creative Director for online videos?

Oh wow, well first of all, I get to meet so many amazing people from featuring them on our travel vlog. Also, there are very few limitations on what we can do online, so I really get to express myself creatively and artistically with no barriers or glass ceilings.

Other than WhenInManila.com, where else can we find more of your stories or wacky adventures?

Before WIM, I created two other sites where I express my thoughts and unleash my inner turrets syndrome....

VinceGolangco.com - where I post my inspirational stories

MotivatedMonkey.com - where I post my crazy, drunken adventures.

I figured they didn't really mesh well together if I put them on the same site. I sort of have polar extremes with my personality; one side is super inspired and professional while the other is totally crazy, idiotic and fun. Thus, the two different websites.

Tell us something we don't know.

I've been to five of the seven continents, I love cats, I crave sushi at least once a week and I'm too positive for some people to h andle.

If YOU were stuck for one hour in an elevator, which famous person would you want to be stuck with and what would YOU say to him / her?

Steve Jobs. I just want to ask him what keeps him ticking. I love the speech he gave at Stanford and I constantly am reminded of what he said there: "Stay hungry, stay foolish!" I'd love to ask Steve about what motivates and inspires him in life.

What's YOUR favorite book?  Why?

I LOVE books so much, I call myself a "book-whore"... haha. I can't think of just one... I'd have to mention at least two:

"The 4 Hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferriss -

It's a book that will really change the way you see life and work. He talks about the "New Rich" and how this new class of people value time, more than money. So finding ways to free up my time so I can do the things I truly enjoy in life is how I function now because of this book.

"Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson -

The only constant in life is that everything changes. Change is such a powerful force in one’s life and knowing how to deal with it is crucial in both the business world and in our personal lives.

Who Moved My Cheese” is an amazing guide that teaches us how to embrace and adapt to change. The concepts in this very short book live with me and constantly replay in my head whenever I face new and different events in my life.

Oh and currently I’m reading “Viral Loop” by Adam Penenberg, which I also highly recommend. (HungryPeople has actually interviewed Adam Penenberg before, click here for the interview).

What is a quote you live by?

"The real danger for most of us, is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it" ~Michelangelo

What are YOU hungry for?

I'm hungry for education, both to receive it and to give it. I actually just did a project where you advocate one of the millennium goals set by the United Nations. I picked education because I firmly believe that it is the foundation that will allow a person to live out his / her dreams and achieve his / her goals. I love taking new classes or seminars and hope to set up opportunities for the less fortunate to be able to receive better education in the future.

How has YOUR background in the US Military helped YOU become who you are today?

The US Military gave me so much discipline and responsibility, it really pushed me to grow up and be a man. I mean it's really different when you're representing and protecting an entire nation. The situations you're put into while serving just won't allow your mindset to stay immature or irresponsible. I grew up and learned so much about myself from that.

Tell us about the most interesting person YOU'VE met.  Why?

The most interesting person I've met is one of my best friends today, Christina Tyndall. She's a wilderness exploration guide / teambuilding facilitator who's an absolute bundle of joy! She always has the biggest smile on her face and she's the most positive person I've ever met. They say that the people you hang around with reflect who you are; I've become more positive and a better overall person because I met Christina.
